Describes solid state display systems for use in vehicles. All the light emitting displays considered are brighter and more colourful than hitherto, although at the low duty cycles used for multiplexing, luminance values are reduced. Discusses the characteristics of LEDs, powder DC electroluminescence, AC electroluminescence and vacuum fluorescent displays. These characteristics include efficiency and operating life, which relates to mean time between failures or, for gradual diminution of emission, time to half brightness. Display visibility is also discussed.
