The GEODSS System will consist of five electro-optical sites located with approximately equal spacing around the Earth to provide overlapping sky coverage for the detection and tracking of man-made space objects. A brief history of its forerunner, Baker-Nunn, is presented in conjunction with the rationale for an electro-optical surveillance system. A system overview provides general function and capability description and is followed by a more detailed discussion of the system elements. Short discussions of future developments in support of space surveillance requirements conclude with a summary of the GEODSS contributions to the space surveillance mission.
