In a quest to reduce installation and maintenance costs, Milan metro has been conducting a series of trials since 1977 with various types of plastic and fibreglass catenary supports. As a result, catenary on a 3 km extension from Cascina Gobba to Cologno Nord has been erected using fibre-reinforced plastic supports. Indications are that savings of up to 70 per cent in maintenance costs can be achieved each year compared with traditional insulators and supporting structures.
