All over the world, managements are examining the economics of electrification as an antidote to the steep rise in diesel fuel prices. In densely-populated countries, it is often a case of expanding an existing network for which technical standards have already been developed. There are, however, a number of lines carrying heavy traffic through arid or desert regions which can be electrified as an isolated project, either because the line is physically independent, or because the heavy-haul operation is large enough to justify its own fleet of locomotives. In such cases, significant economies can be achieved by tailoring the electrical and mechanical design of the catenary and power supply network to the requirements of the particular line or traffic flow. Indeed, the environment may be so unfavourable that it is impractical to adopt conventional standards applied to a national network serving many different needs.
