The Federal Aviation Administration Technical Center (FAA-TC) recently announced the completion of a project to determine the feasibility of an airport surveillance radar wind shear detection system. Wind shear (i.e., abrupt changes in wind speed or direction) is especially a problem during landing and takeoff. The new system monitors altitudes of wind shear up to 1600 feet and out to the instrument landing system (ILS) marker (about 6 nautical miles). The system will complement present shear warning systems now in operation at several major airports that monitor from ground level to a height of about 60 feet.
