An important application for microwave frequency sources is the ELINT (electronic intelligence) receiver. ELINT receivers are used to search a broad range of frequencies for signals that may be emitted by a potential adversary. This search must take place rapidly, and the receiving equipment must be highly sensitive and accurate in order to detect even weak signals, and permit the precise measurement of their frequencies. High sensitivity means that the frequency source within the receiver must generate as little noise as possible so as not to obscure the weak incoming signals. Accuracy of signal frequency measurement means that the receiver's internally generated reference frequency source must be extremely stable and oscillate at precisely the intended frequency. These requirements are not easy to meet for ELINT receivers operating in the microwave spectrum. PLL applications are discussed.
