States that the availability of microprocessors and LSI devices seems likely to bring profound changes in engine design. Systems with programmable dwell time require fairly complex electronics but enable spark energy levels to be increased and to be maintained throughout the speed range even in an engine with many cylinders. Also exhaust gas emission and fuel consumption requirements are making electronic ignition systems more attractive, if not essential, and such systems can also provide the higher energy required for the wider plug gaps needed for increased intervals between servicing.
