Discusses the developments and applications of the Navstar system, particularly in the fields of global navigation and position determination. The Navstar Global Positioning System (GPS) is basically a military system but its potential for civilian use includes maritime, aviation and space applications. The function of the Navstar system and its main parts (satellites, ground stations and users' facilities such as ground vehicles, ships or aircrafts), is discussed.
