Mechanical and electronic controls for timing of injection relative to pistion positon and the start of combustion are compared with regard to accuracy, resolution, control parameters and interactive capability. Microprocessor controlled systems for diesel engines are illustrated which control both fueling and injection timing and can provide additional functions such as cruise control, diagnostics, display functions and transmission control.
