Discusses the development of tactical-missile guidance systems at Raytheon. The PATRIOT system transmitter is solid state and it turns off while the receiver is listening. The multiple range-Doppler resolution cells of the pulse Doppler waveform are simultaneously examined by a digital signal processor. It employs an accurate inertial reference system capable of guiding the missile most of the way to the target on its own. The guidance computer uses logic and to reduce the target noise it employs special algorithms to minimize the corrupting signals. It achieves very fast response with very small miss distance, due in part to a sophisticated digital autopilot.
