Naval patrol vessels and submarines require sophisticated yet cost-effective radio systems which are able to provide several different communication circuits. The requirements of the user are considered and radio equipment configurations are proposed for patrol vessels ranging from 30 metres to 80 metres. The means of selecting circuits and routeing them to the various user positions on board ship is also described. The layout of the radio rooms of small vessels needs careful consideration and a typical plan is given to show how the suggested systems can be accommodated. The design constraints imposed by this application are given.
