This year Moroccan Railways will inaugurate electric traction on the first section of the phosphates artery from Benguerir serving the port of Safi. The catenary will reach Safi next year, by which time ONCFM expects to be wiring up the new line from Nouasseur to the port of Jorf Lasfar. Electrification of other routes is being given serious consideration in the face of high energy costs, but in the immediate future ONCFM is grappling with the problem of marine and industrial corrosion on fixed equipment. Experiments have been conducted with radio remote control in an effort to raise throughput on the phosphates routes.
