By employing the timer-pool software technique single-timer microprocessor-based systems can provide multiple-timer capabilities. Originally developed for an automotive engine-control application demanding high accuracy and fast execution while multiplexing several simultaneous output functions via a single muC and timer, the programming method provides savings in both hardware expense and circuit complexity. The technique was designed for use with the MC6801 muC, but can be applied to other singlechip muCs, as well as to bus-oriented muPs requiring external components such as programmable timers or ROM-I/O timers.
