An approach to the problems of programming large systems using shared memory is discussed. This approach has proved effective for a variety of real-time control problems at Raytheon. The origins of the approach are explained. As an example the TARTAR five-control system is considered. This controls the Standard Missile, and consists of an antenna transmitter, a receiver, a radar data processor and an operators console. The example contains both hierarchical and peer level communication.
