The use of an independent hydroelectric supply for the Swiss railways not only improved their reliability, but also allowed them to be fed directly with the most appropriate frequency. Adding a pumped-storage element to the system strengthened its operational characteristics, at the same time meeting slight changes in the demand pattern. The background to the various decisions made to build the pumped-storage plant, and a description of the associated civil works are included in this part of the article.
