The increasing use of regenerative electric braking may involve redesign of traction sub-stations if rheostatic braking is to be completely avoided. An account of the theoretical and practical problems involved is followed by typical circuitry arrangements, with particular reference to fault protection. Control circuitry is considered and a mathematical analysis of the requirements is presented.
