The second generation high speed diode and thyristors are replacing earlier devices in traction sub-stations and already a third generation is under development suitable for 2500 volt and 1200 amp service. The 1979 practice in Italian manufacture is reviewed and likely future development is forecasted. The use of asymmetric thyristors in future development is considered.
