For many years the state railway administrations of New South Wales and Victoria have operated electrified suburban systems serving the cities of Sydney and Melbourne respectively - though, where justified by loadings and traffic densities, some sections extend a considerable distance into the country areas. Both states started their electrification projects in the 1920s and opted for 1500 V DC traction.
