Reports the energisation of the final section of Taiwan's West Trunk main line on July (1979), taking the wires into Kaohslung and completing the five-year task of electrifying one of the world's busiest passenger railways. Main contractor GEC Transportation Projects Ltd. was faced with energising 1153 track-km during possessions that were limited to 4 hours a day, while local staff carried out the no less arduous task of upgrading 800 km of running line for 120 km/h. The GEC provided a complete package involving design, installation and commissioning of overhead line equipment, substations and telecommunications, as well as provision of 13 five-car EMU sets and 20 of the locomotives required.
