Advances in air and marine transport in recent decades have required a considerably increased level of metrological support to inertial navigation and control systems; the problem is one of considerable complexity because these instruments represent some of the most complex ones in general use. The standards for metrological support to such systems may be based on existing standards and standard facilities in various areas of metrology, precision engineering, and some branches of instrumentation. The All-Union Metrology Research Institute, in particular, has designed the US-4 equipment, which works over the range 1-1000 rad/sec and has an error of about 0.005%, which is intended for testing and calibrating integrating motors. It is shown that a necessary but not sufficient set of standards and facilities of the highest precision should include the following: a standard for the unit of angular velocity (rad/sec), a standard for the unit of angular acceleration (rad/sec2), a standard for the unit of linear acceleration (m/sec2). a system for storing and transmitting initial azimuths along with initial means of determining the plane of the horizon, and standard means of determining dynamic characteristics of gyros and accelerometers (angular and linear).
