An outline is given of the development of communication satellites, secondary transponders, and mobile earth stations which are likely to be operational in the 1980s. These include the use of single-channel transponders on all Navstar GPS and DSCS III satellites, the transition from Marisat to a new system called Leasat, and the deployment of a network of mobile terminals for operation with DSCS II/III.
