Examples of overhead wire pick-up designs for railway trains are given on the basis of an historical survey starting from the AC, 2200 kW installation of 1903 on the Berlin suburban line. Other designs illustrated are the Alkmaar-Amsterdam arrangement in 1956, the E-loc series 1126 of the NS, the SNCF 25 kV system, and examples of Dutch, Italian and Russian techniques. Technical features outlined relate mainly to the geometrical and mechanical features of the pantograph wire suspension methods and materials component analysis of constituent parts.
