To reduce the danger caused by a crisis-mode operation by the pilot in actual emergency, it is proposed to computerise the emergency landing operation by a precise estimate of the ground distance and velocity of fall by a sonar Doppler device, whose output is fed to a small control computer (microcomputer) which, in turn, controls timing of descent and rotor blade angle. The program describing this operation, generated through simulation and allowing individual adjustments by tests and subsequent personalisation to the specific helicopter model, is stored in the memory of the control computer.
