Princeton physicist Gerard K. O'Neill first recognized the possibilities of moving masses in space via electromagnetic propulsion, and involved a number of investigators, in a project to design such a materials launching system for a lunar mining operation. In studying electromagnetic flight as a means of space propulsion, it is concluded that electromagnetic drivers would apply to two major space operations-launching raw materials from the lunar surface and propelling large space structures or asteroids by launching waste material as reaction mass.
