The components of a night viewer using infra-red radiation are noted as an external objective, pick-up screen, detector, cooler, pre-amplifier and main amplifier, light-emitting diode display and ocular lens. The most novel item in the arrangement is the detector which takes the form of a small window of special alloy material, typically InSb, HgCdTe or PbSnTe. The cooler uses a liquid nitrogen circuit, using a thermodynamic cycle incorporating the Joule-Thomson effect. Some applications in military, civil and industrial fields are quoted, and sample pictures illustrated.
