The paper discusses international space stations. The first sections are devoted to the Apollo Soyuz Test Project, the European Spacelab, and the Space Shuttle. The need for a continuously manned space station in Earth orbit is emphasised. In later sections detailed plans for future space stations, to be constructed between 1986 and 2005, are presented. Throughout the paper the emphasis is placed on the ability of human beings to perform the complex tasks of building and operating a space station.
