A transducer has been developed for laboratory use whose electrical impedance is a consistent linear function of the acoustic impedance of a sediment in contact with its radiating face. It is hoped to design and construct a transducer capable of withstanding high ambient pressures so that in situ data can be obtained at the bottom of the ocean.
