The design and construction of a hydrophone array for deep ocean submersions is described, without the use of pressure-release materials or pressure-compensating or-equalising techniques. The hydrophone consisted of a beam-forming array of staves circumferentially mounted in a 20-inch diameter housing, and its frequency response and beam patterns were found to be little changed by pressures up to 1000 psi. The problems discussed include element backing, the backing impedance and the presence of complex cylindrical waves.
