A new electricity control system which has significant cost and energy savings potential was recently launched by Lord Mayor of the City of London. The new scheme has been installed initially on some 500 street lamps and signs in cooperation with the Fleet District of the London Electricity Board. If successful, it is intended to extend it to all the 6000 outdoor points in the Square Mile. The Corporation is the first local authority in the country to adopt the 'Cyclocontrol' system, which uses a relatively small transmitter to inject a 'coded message' into the mains supply and activate a special receiver that then operates lighting, heating or other electrical apparatus connected to the circuit. The technique's almost maintenance-free character should enable the Corporation to recoup its costs within three to four years, or sooner in the event of any power failures, and the savings rate is expected to continue throughout the system's lifetime.
