In support of the planetary boundary layer (PBL) subprogram of the AMTEX '75, the Radio Research Laboratories transportable sodar observation was carried out at Karimata, Miyakojima Island. Thermal plumes in the maritime PBL appeared even in the night time during the period of unstable atmospheric conditions, that is, the sea surface temperature is higher than the air temperature by 3 to 5 degrees or more with relatively calm wind conditions (less than 7 m/sec). Different from the overland observation a distinct trend of diurnal variation of sodar echo pattern could not be found in the maritime PBL.
