Radio communication with all trains and maintenance crews allows Hamersley Iron's Train Controller to regulate traffic with precision and provide the maximum possible ontrack time for machines between trains. Microwave is used to link eight VHF transmitter and receiver stations covering 388 route-km, and this also provides an emergency channel to keep centralised traffic control functioning if the open-wire pole route is damaged.
