Gives a consideration of the principles of operation and the essential characteristics required for the establishment of efficient lighting services. The technical feature of various available sources of illumination are discussed and their relative characteristics and efficiencies are compared. A detailed study is made of the phenomena utilised in the production of light, in the fields of incandescence, fluorescence, phosphorescence and electroluminescence, and their relative spectra examined. Characteristics are given of typical lamps currently in service.
