Leicester, with 290000 inhabitants and high traffic density, has long been a pioneer in solving traffic problems. In October 1974 it became the first English town to introduce a computer-controlled system of co-ordinated traffic lights. The control centre, manned from 0700 to 1900 hours, has 12 CCTV systems. There are 94 traffic light installations and 43 detector points. Of the two Honeywell H316 computers, each with a 3K core store and a back-up store of 360K-words, one is normally in reserve.
