Describes the design and the traction and braking characteristics of a relatively low power prototype motor for use on suburban EMU stock. The motor takes advantage of the ready availability of 470 mm diameter hollow axles designed for the advanced passenger train. The stator is inserted within the axle and a squirrel cage motor is fixed to the inside of the hollow tube connecting the wheels. One tapping is provided on each of the star-connected stator windings. The system adopts a six-step invertor with one phase floating. Maximum rated motor power of 185 kW is available at high speed.
