A sufficient number of automatic systems have been commissioned to discern trends and compare approaches. Two broad categories have emerged: the track circuit dependent systems of the Americas and Britain, and the track conductor systems of continental Europe. The former use of the rails to transmit commands from wayside to train and are therefore limited to narrow band channels. The latter use inductive loops and are therefore free of the narrow band limitations of rails.
