The compensator is an automatic feedback system which compare a predetermined signal with an acoustically coupled signal containing both the programme and the ambient noise and adjusts the level of the receiver output volume to maintain a given signal-to-noise ratio set by the user. The volume of the car radio is adjusted to compensate for the ambient noise and the effects of wind noise, road noise, engine noise, and even back seat noise are eliminated by the compensation circuit. A permanent magnet loudspeaker is used as a microphone to pick up all the sounds heard by the driver and the signal is processed to give signals proportional to the radio programme and the ambient noise. Advice on the construction, installation and adjustment of the compensator are included.
