General principles of linear motors are described, including arrangements of primary conductors in laminated steel slots and a double-sided sandwich motor with a secondary of aluminium strip. Problem of levitation and stability are discussed. Techniques of high speed transport systems, including air cushion levitation and cryogenic coils, are presented.
