The opening of its first 9.5 km rapid transit line (1974 Aug. 15) not only eases traffic problems in the heavily congested city, but also forms the vital link enabling suburban lines now being electrified to serve the central area. Close integration has resulted in a standardised fleet of rolling stock, but two electrical systems (25 kV 60 Hz and 1.5 kV d.c.) will be used from the outset because of technical problems.
