The simulation of ground swells in the laboratory has, for a long time, been one of the major pre-occupations of marine engineers. Spectral analysis using Fourier transforms is described, with the laboratory equipment specially designed for the simulation of irregular swells and the analytical treatment of the measurements. A summary of the results is given including a study of the effects of both regular and irregular disturbances on certain marine structures. It is concluded that further technical improvements are desirable and more elaborate research programmes are envisged.
