This article is devoted to the study of the electron emission from neutralizer filaments working under ion bombardment for use in a cesium contact ion thruster. Two types of filaments were tested: a filament of carburized thoriated tungsten and a filament of rhenium coated with a lanthanum hexaboride. The experimental results and theoretical predictions are compared. When used as neutralizers, these filaments have a life time over 10000 h, an identical power consumption (6 to 7 W) and satisfactory emitting properties. Contrary to the thoriated tungsten type filaments, the lanthanum boride ones exhibit an electron emission which is insensitive to a temporary increase of the ion bombardment.
