The advantages of electric thruster over other techniques of propulsion by reaction is discussed in this article. After mentioning the different planetary exploration missions using primary electric propulsion, the use of auxiliary propulsion for the station keeping of geostationary satellites is discussed. The principal technologies for the development of ion thrusters (ionization by bombardment and cesium contact ionization) are described and compared.
