Few lines in the world suffer from winter conditions as severe as those on the Bergen line, but the whole NSB network requires specialised equipment to clear snow and ice at an annual cost of 14 million kroner. Careful selection and positioning of mechanised snowploughs and static devices such as fences and snowsheds keep the line clear of bulk snow, while points, rodding and flangeways have to be heated or protected by techniques still evolving.
