A new era in maritime communications will start when the first commercial maritime satellite is launched in November 1974. However, the economic feasibility of an international maritime communications system depends largely on system configuration and the expected traffic. Telephone and telex tariffs have been estimated for two possible satellite configurations based on both high and low traffic forecasts.
