Previously the Wairarapa E.P.B. had used 5-6-ton line trucks with six-man cabs, flat decks and super-imposed ladder racks and tool boxes. Poles had been transported in bulk by outside contractors or singly on a trailing jinker. However, present thinking indicates insufficient personnel mobility with one vehicle to six men, and the jinker's manoeuvrability and load capability had serious limitations. Consequently, a vehicle with the specification described was considered to be the best compromise.
