In the early 1960s, aware of the growing complexity of onboard systems, electronics engineers designed new equipment for monitoring them and so help airlines maintain their fleets. This equipment evolved into the Aircraft Integrated Data System. Standardized by ARINC under pressure from airlines and manufacturers, these systems weigh 100 kg on some aircraft, which most users say is not offset by economic gains. AIDS has usually been added to the aircraft and has seldom been a system designed on rational bases, which may explain its comparative lack of success.
