See abstr. C14144 (1971). Quaternion updates of the direction cosine matrix in strapdown navigation of space vehicles have many beneficial features, one of which is the simplicity of the orthogonalization routine of the attitude matrix. This orthogonalization is achieved by normalizing the quaternion of rotation. It is shown by way of counterexample that the normalized quaternion given does not, in general, provide an optimal solution to the quaternion normalization problem. A proof yielding the optimal solution to these problems is given.
