The invasion of software into what has tended to be strictly the realm of hardware can be expected to produce a new generation of radars, in which the borderline between data collection and data processing will tend to vanish. Combat aircraft appearing shortly will be equipped with interception radar offering versatile functions such as obstacle avoidance, terrain following, mapping display and air-to-surface ranging. Future systems may offer the pilot continuous TV image display of information in synthetic form on a three-colour scope. In selecting targets, no interpreting would be required by the pilot in order to distinguish useful information from spurious echoes. Aide-looking reconnaissance radars make a line-by-line terrain scan, using the aircraft's motion to provide coverage. A moving target indicator function is also available with these radars.
