The development of the RCA Satcom system in two phases is described. The system is expected to be most cost-effective communication system, using a combination of lightweight space craft and launch vehicles. The basic characteristics of the system with planned satellite locations are outlined. The orbiting satellites will be powered by solar energy derived from two solar arrays. The satellites are designed for operation in the 4/6 GHz bands. The system is planned and designed to provide flexibility for new areas in addition to providing basic communication services, including long lines facilities for Alaska.
