Discusses in outline the techniques developed over the last decade for the tracking of and acquisition of data from planetary and interplanetary probes launched by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. The Deep Space Network of tracking stations including the Hartebeesthoek facility is briefly described. Spacecraft are considered in general terms so that the tracking requirements may be defined. The techniques are then covered in terms of the three basic functions: tracking, telemetry and command. The paper concludes with a short survey of probable developments during the seventies.
