Manpower saving projects and/or automation systems have resulted from the labor-intensive systems prevalent in Japanese railways, due to the shortage of available young manpower and the increase in personnel costs. In this article, ticket sales, booking, inspecting and collecting, and behind-the-scenes activities, including reports on ticket issues or statistics preparation have been mechanized or computerized. Toshiba is promoting total systems and various equipment pertaining to automated railway business.
